If you're one of the many gamers with red-green colorblindness, none of that is you playing badly — it's a game using color to tell you things you can't see.
Here's the part most colorblind gamers never find out: every major platform already has a setting built specifically to fix this, and on most of them it's switched off by default. No new hardware, no glasses — just a filter you turn on in about a minute.

What's actually going wrong
Red-green colorblindness — deuteranopia and protanopia — is the common kind, affecting roughly one in twelve men and far fewer women. Red and green show up as similar muted tones, which is a problem because that's exactly the pair games lean on hardest: enemies, danger, low health and hit markers in red; friendlies, safe zones and your own team in green. The system meant to make threats obvious is the one hiding them.
Blue-yellow colorblindness (tritanopia) is rarer and causes different trouble — ice, water and yellow UI blur together. Platform filters treat the three types separately, so knowing roughly which one is yours points you to the right setting.
For competitive play the upshot is brutal: most shooters default to a red-enemy, green-friendly language on both the outlines and the minimap. For a red-green colorblind player that's the worst possible choice, applied to the two things you look at most.
Windows PC: the setting most players have never found
Windows 11 has built-in color filters for deuteranopia, protanopia and tritanopia. They used to carry a real cost for competitive play — added input latency and broken fullscreen optimizations — but that's been fixed. The filters now run on your GPU's color hardware, so there's no measurable latency or performance hit, even in fullscreen games. There's no longer a reason to leave them off.
How to turn it on: Settings → Accessibility → Color filters. Switch it on and pick your type. An intensity slider controls how far it shifts colors; a color-boost slider adds vividness. You don't need to max it out — you want just enough shift that red and green separate, not a total repaint of your screen. Assign the quick toggle, Windows key + Ctrl + C, so you can flip it on for gaming and off for video or color-sensitive work.
Nvidia users can stack a second, different fix: Digital Vibrance (Nvidia Control Panel → Display → Adjust Desktop Color Settings). Nudging it up moderately raises saturation across the display, which makes color-coded elements pop even after the filter has shifted them — handy when a game's art is muted and colors go muddy. AMD has the same control under its display color settings, as Saturation.
Xbox Series X/S
Settings → Accessibility → Color filters, with the same three types and the same intensity and color-boost sliders as Windows. Because it's a system filter, it works in every game — including older ones with no accessibility settings of their own. One caveat: if a game has a good built-in colorblind mode (see below), use that instead; layering both can over-correct. Treat the system filter as the safety net.
PlayStation 5
Settings → Accessibility → Display and Sound → Color Correction. Turn on the color filter, choose your profile, and set the strength. It's a touch less granular than Xbox's sliders, but it's system-wide the same way, so it covers every game you play.
Nintendo Switch
The original Switch and Switch Lite have no built-in colorblind filter at all — your only help there is whatever the specific game offers. The Switch 2 added grayscale, inverted colors and a high-contrast mode, which is broader and blunter than the deuteranopia-specific filters on Xbox and PlayStation, but better than nothing.
Why a game's own settings beat a blanket filter
A system-wide filter shifts every color on screen — effective, but a blunt instrument. A game that lets you change just the enemy outline from red to something you can actually see — orange, white, cyan — fixes the exact problem without touching how everything else looks. When a game offers that, reach for it first. The four settings worth hunting for are enemy outline color, teammate color, minimap marker color and hit-marker color — the four places red-green confusion does the most damage.
The best implementations give you per-element control rather than one blanket "deuteranopia" toggle. Call of Duty's Warzone and Black Ops line is among the most complete in competitive shooters — enemy, crosshair and interface colors all set independently. The Last of Us Part II is known for the depth of its accessibility menu, including custom enemy and HUD highlight colors. Forza Horizon 5 pairs a colorblind mode with high-contrast UI options.
The counterexample worth knowing: Apex Legends has real colorblind presets, but Bloodhound's and Crypto's scans still light enemies up in default red no matter which preset you pick — a long-standing gap that's still there in 2026. If you play Apex, run a low-intensity system filter underneath as a backup.
How to check what's actually working
Simplest test: turn on the deuteranopia filter for your platform, load the game you struggle with most, and drop into a match or the practice range. Can you now separate the enemy outlines from the background? If the system filter isn't enough, open the game's own accessibility settings and look for the enemy-color options; if the game has none, the system filter is your answer. What about colorblind glasses?
Colorblind glasses — EnChroma, Pilestone and the like — filter the overlapping wavelengths between red and green to pull them apart, and in bright natural daylight some people find them worth trying for everyday life. For gaming, they're generally the wrong tool. They're tuned for reflected daylight, while a screen emits its own light, which changes how the lens interacts with the colors — independent reviewers consistently flag the market leaders as poor performers indoors and on screens. Does the Windows filter affect video and streaming too, not just games?
Yes — it's system-wide, so games, video, browser and desktop all get it. That's why the Win+Ctrl+C shortcut matters: flip it off for watching video or color-sensitive work, back on for gaming. That toggling is normal once you've set it up.
Do I need to know exactly which type of colorblindness I have?
It helps you pick the right filter, but if you're unsure: any red-green confusion is almost certainly deuteranopia or protanopia — try both and keep whichever helps more. A free online Ishihara test narrows it down in a couple of minutes, and an optometrist can confirm it properly. Blue-yellow (tritanopia) is rare enough that if red and green are your problem, it almost certainly isn't that.
Can I use the system filter and a game's colorblind mode at once?
You can, but stacking them often over-corrects into colors that are garish or harder to read than either alone. Better: use the game's own mode first, and only if a specific problem (enemy outlines, minimap markers) isn't fully solved, add a low-intensity system filter on top — reduced settings on both rather than maxing them out.
What about old games with no colorblind mode?
The system filters cover exactly this. On PC and on Xbox and PS5, the filter applies at the OS level, before the game's image reaches your eyes, so it works regardless of the game's age or its own settings. The only real gap is older Switch hardware, which has no system filter at all.
